Prodrift Super Series @ Donny with TEAM WKD
It seems an eternity since the stormy skies opened up at loading time in the yard of WKD Imports in Tullow last friday, it somehow seems even longer from the 2am sailing the next morning, crazy i know !!!
This would be the maiden trip for Team WKD and proved an excellent excercise to run everything through the motions and clear up any loose ends for the long drift series of events from Prodrift this year.
With Nigel Colfer’s car for this year getting some final work done at home he would be driving a Top Garage built s14a, a previous import from WKD, Johnny P arrived for action and looked eager to get behind the wheel of new drift car to the scene for this year and despite clutch issues his eagerness really shone through qualifying an amazing 2nd overall despite this being his first time to drive his new car and despite him being out of competition for over a year.
The qualifying round threw up a interesting battle for TEAM WKD as Johnny P was lined up against Alan Sinnott who is the WKD Imports garage mechanic by day, I call him the Tullow Tofu dealer by night
The duo fought out a close battle but unfortunately Johnny P’s action was haulted for the day with mechanical issues.
Sinnott was faced then with Alan Lenihan who had looked consistent and threatining all day long which is really no suprise as the Lenihan brothers are amongst the top talents in drifing in Ireland.
Possibly one of the most exciting battles of the day with bumper to bumper action from the two brave drifters that would not give an inch away.
It was Lenihan who progressed with Sinnott being penalised for talking an incorrect line while overtaking his rival coming out of the first corner.
With Colfer’s day having ending earlier with mechanical issues also, drifting was over for TEAM WKD for the day at least, with Ennis coming at the end of the month TEAM WKD are confident to have a pressing team ready again for the event.
It was Dean Kearney who won overall after a nail biting final with Gavin Lenihan.
It was a long weekend but a thouroughly enjoyable one, this being said I was glad to see the back lid lifting up on the truck
